Girls Inc develops research-based informal education programs that encourage girls to take risks and master physical, intellectual and emotional challenges. The programs we address math and science education, pregnancy, media literacy, economic literacy, adolescent health, and violence prevention.
Preventing Adolescent Pregnancy
Preventing Adolescent Pregnancy (PAP) helps girls identify ways and reasons to avoid early pregnancy. The program fosters girls' communication skills, provides basic health education, and encourages girls to plan for the future through four age-appropriate components: Growing Together, Will Power/Won't Power, Taking Care of Business, and Health Bridge. The first two components have been translated into Spanish as Crecer Juntas and Querer/Poder Decir "no".
Operation SMART
Operation SMART- builds girls skills and interests in science, math, and technology. Hands-on activities give girls the opportunity to explore, ask questions, and solve problems, all of which help to build self-confidence. Participation in this program encourages girls to pursue careers in the fields of science, math, and technology.
Media Literacy
Media Literacy- encourages girls to think critically about media messages and gives them the tools they need to become effective media consumers. Girls Re-Cast TV is a unique program in Los Angeles that teaches girls to analyze what they see and hear on television, film, and video. Girls learn to advocate for images they would like to see, while gaining exposure to a wide range of entertainment careers.
Economic Literacy
Economic Literacy- introduces girls as young as six to basic financial concepts, including money management and investment. The program explores how money affects us locally and globally as it fosters development of the skills needed to be financially self-sufficient.
Girls Advisory Board (GAB)
Girls Advisory Board (GAB)- is a youth advisory board comprised of girls from CERG (the Collaborative for the Economic Empowerment and Readiness of Girls) member organizations. High school age girls work as a team to learn about and put into practice the principles of: Philanthropy, Economic Literacy, Board Governance, Grantmaking, Spokes-personship.
